From Problem to Better Problem
Let’s get real for a second: success doesn’t erase problems, it upgrades them.
We live in a world that sells “problem-free” as the ultimate dream:
No stress.
No fires.
No challenges.
Cute fantasy. Totally unrealistic.
Your clients don’t hire you so their challenges magically vanish.
Your team doesn’t follow you because you promise an obstacle-free journey.
They choose you because you help them trade old, limiting problems for new, better ones that come with growth.
That’s the game. That’s leadership.
What’s a “Better” Problem, Exactly?
A better problem is one that:
- Comes from growth, not stagnation
- Forces you to think and lead at a higher level
- Requires systems, clarity, and courage — not just hustle
Think about it:
- Starting out, the problem is:
“I don’t have enough clients.”
- After some growth, the problem becomes:
“How do I manage the flood of demand without burning out?”
Same business.
Different problem.
Way better problem.
Or:
- Start-up stage: “I can’t get enough clients/customers.”
- Growth stage: “Now I need the right team to keep up with demand.”
- Small retail shop: “Foot traffic is too low.”
- Expanded / online business: “Inventory is flying off the shelves — how do I keep it in stock without killing cash flow?”
- Solo consultant: “I’m exhausted wearing all the hats.”
- Scaling consultancy: “How do I delegate without losing quality and control?”
- Construction company: “Finding contracts is tough.”
- Winning bigger contracts: “Now I need tighter systems so projects don’t bleed profit.”
Different problem. Better problem. That’s momentum.
Why This Reframe Is Coaching & Leadership Gold
Here’s where most people get stuck:
They treat every problem as a sign something is wrong with them…
instead of evidence that they’re playing at a different level.
When you don’t reframe, problems feel like:
- Proof you’re failing
- Reasons to shrink back
- “See? I knew I couldn’t handle this”
When you do reframe, problems become:
- Data: “Okay, THIS is the new reality. Good to know.”
- Direction: “What does this problem tell me about where we’re growing?”
- Development: “What skill or structure does this challenge ask us to build?”
In other words:
Problems are not a detour from the path — they are the path.
Every leap you make in business replaces one set of constraints with a higher-level challenge.
That’s where real leaders sharpen their edge.
Truth Bomb: No Problems = No Growth
This might sting a little:
If you have no problems, you’re not playing big enough.
No hiring issues?
No pricing questions?
No operational friction anywhere?
That usually doesn’t mean you’re “perfect.”
It often means you’re under-committed, under-exposed, and not stretching.
Big vision?
Ambitious goals?
Category leadership?
They don’t come with a problem-free existence.
They come with better, braver, more strategic problems to solve.
How to Use “Better Problems” With Your Clients & Team
This is where you turn this from a nice idea into a powerful tool.
This week, with your clients or your team, try this simple sequence:
- Name the current problem honestly.
- “We’re over-reliant on me as the founder.”
- “Our delivery is great, but our onboarding is chaotic.”
- “We’re winning work, but profit is inconsistent.”
- Ask: If we were at our next level, what would our problem be?
- “We now have a leadership bench — our new problem is developing their leadership.”
- “Our onboarding is smooth — our new problem is innovating faster than competitors.”
- “Profit is healthy — our new problem is deciding which opportunities to say no to.”
- Frame it out loud as an upgrade.
- “Our current problem: inconsistent onboarding.
Our better problem: onboarding is so smooth we now need to improve how we wow clients post-sale.”
- “Our current problem: inconsistent onboarding.
- Design the next small move.
Not a 47-step project plan. One move.- Book a process-mapping session.
- Create a simple decision filter for which projects you accept.
- Document the way you do something so someone else can do it 80–90% as well.
Now you’re not just firefighting.
You’re consciously upgrading your problems.
Leap of the Week
Here’s your Leap of the Week:
What problem am I ready to upgrade to next?
Ask yourself.
Ask your leadership team.
Ask your clients.
Let it be an honest conversation:
- Which problems are we clinging to because they’re familiar?
- Which better problems are we secretly ready for — but haven’t claimed yet?
- What would we have to believe about ourselves to step into those upgraded problems?
Because leadership isn’t about problem-free living.
It’s about problem-solving that fuels clarity, confidence, and momentum.
If you’re reading this and thinking,
“Okay, I’m definitely ready for better problems — I just don’t want to upgrade them blindly,”
that’s exactly the kind of work I do with founders, CEOs, and leadership teams.
If you want support to:
- Identify your current constraints
- Clarify your next “better problems”
- And architect your business to handle that next level without burning out
