Are you one to walk the walk, or only talk the talk? One of the benefits of being an entrepreneur is that you don’t have to report to anyone. On the other hand, this “perk” can also be your biggest liability because you don’t have to report to anyone. No one is holding you accountable for your results.
Procrastination. The #1 results killer in life and business, period. I can just hear you say “Oh, I don’t tend to procrastinate…”, and yet your house has been “un-finished” and in “construction mode” for years; your car has not been cleaned in months; your bookkeeping is 3 years behind; your employees haven’t had performance reviews in over a year; and, although you may say that you value employee and customer feedback, you don’t have a formal “feedback system” in place yet.
The only way to create results is by taking action, and by taking action I mean “doing what you say you’re going to do”. This creates trust, and with trust, comes credibility. “Where the rubber meets the road” is my way of saying “deliver what you say, period”. No ifs, ands or buts.
To create RESULTS, you need to take ACTION. You also need to set realistic goals and commit to them 300%. Goalsetting is easy, it’s the follow through that often takes a hit. Believe me, it’s much easier to do it…than to dwell on it.
Start “Walking your Talk” in all areas of your life and witness a massive gain of trust and credibility, built by you and your team, one successfully delivered commitment at a time.
LEAP of the week:
- Make a list of all the things (big or small) that you should do but have been putting off. Let’s call these “boat anchors”.
- Every day, pick one “boat anchor” as your daily “NON-NEGOTIALBE” task to accomplish.
- Find someone to be accountable to. It’s amazing the power of a good accountability program.
Let me share with you a simple, almost banal example of one of my own most recent very successful “XTREME Accountability Program”. First, let me start by saying that I am an extremely accountable person by nature…but I am far from being perfect and for what ever reason, I simply cannot be consistent at flossing daily. You may think that this is a small issue, however, I just put a few thousand dollars on my pearly whites that could have easily been prevented by regular, daily flossing.
I decided to start a 3 months XTREME Accountability Program to solve this once and for all. I picked an “Accountable Partner” (the person that you are accountable to), and let her know that the penatly for not flossing is $100 per infraction…and the kicker is: that the $100 goes to my dentist. It’s been 7 weeks and I have not lost a penny and will simply NOT let that happen. Why would I want to give her more money?
My point is this: Set yourself up for success.
- Pick your “boat anchor” or behavior to bust.
- Choose your Accountability Partner. Someone that will help you stay on track.
- Pick an undesirable consequence to avoid infractions. For some it’s money, for others it’s not going boating on the weekend or taking the god out before bed. What ever it is, you have to NOT WANT it BAD enough to stay with the program.
TIP TO BUILD MOMENTUM: start with the heaviest anchors, the ones that weigh you down the most. You’ll be amazingly surprised at how freeing it is.
